Judith Drew Schubert

Judith Drew Schubert, a Martha’s Vineyard painter, has spent her adult life working as a professional fine artist, creating paintings and patterns that draw attention to amazing but often overlooked aspects of the natural world.

This spring, Judith has succumbed to her love of shore birds and begun to study, in painting, these shoreline residents. Portraits of the ever-present and comical cormorants are the first in this series. The bird study will culminate in a joint show with her cousin, Heidi Drew, at the Vineyard Playhouse September 1 – 21. Judith’s 2017 body of work is titled “Cows, Coves and Cormorants”.

Periwinkle Studio is the name of Judith’s artistic home base, located on the corner of Masonic and Dukes County Avenues in Oak Bluffs. She has been creating and selling her art there for the past two decades. Judith began landscape painting after studying with Rez Williams. This was followed by plein air painting with Marjorie Mason, and several seasons painting under the eye of Ellen McClusky. Most recently she participated in a plein air study session with Liz Taft.

After receiving her Bachelors of Fine Arts from Syracuse University, Judith worked in New York City for Waverly Fabrics as a surface pattern designer. She relocated to Martha’s Vineyard in 1986. Her Vineyard landscapes reside in dozens of private homes across the country and have been blue ribbon winners at the All Island Art Show and the Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Fair.
